Passion & Purity

So I after many weeks of procrastination, I finally finished reading Passion and Purity by Elisabeth Elliot...wow, it made me think about my views and standards on so many issues. I think that any Christian girl (or guy, but especially girls) should absolutely read this book. It will make you think about where you stand, and what God has planned for things concerning dating, relationships, and marriage. But anyway, I just wanted to share some of my favorite sentences, sections, verses, quotes, etc... I practically have half the book underlined!

Passion & Purity

"By trying to grab fulfillment everywhere, we find it nowhere."

"No one, man or woman should be agitated about the choice of a mate, but should be 'asleep' as it were, in the will of God, until it should please Him to 'awake' him." ~Song of Solomon

"Have no fear: for I have paid your ransom; I have called you by name and you are My own." ~Isaiah 43

"I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face"

"Be it by water or fire, O make me clean"

"Take my love--my God, I pour at Thy feet its treasures store." ~Francis Ridley Havergal

"Oh Christ, He is the foundation, the deep, sweet well of love..."

"All is far outweighed by the gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord." ~Apostle Paul

"Do I want what I want, or what He wants, no matter what it might cost?"

"A road may seem straightforward to a man, yet may end as the way to death. Even in laughter the heart may grieve, and mirth may end in sorrow"

"The heart set to do the Father's will need never fear defeat."

"When our hearts are set on obedience, we can be sure of the needed wisdom to tell the difference between a conflict and a harmony."

"Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And there is none upon the earth that I desire besides Thee." ~Psalm 73:25

"The Holy Spirit was given to guide us into all truth, but He doesn't do it all at once."

"Waiting on God requires the willingness to bear uncertainty, to carry within oneself the unanswered question, lifting the heart to God about it whenever it intrudes upon one's thoughts."

"The things we feel most deeply we must learn to keep quiet about , at least until we have talked them over thoroughly with God."

"Waiting is steadfastness, that is holding on; patience, that is holding back; expectancy, that is holding the face up; obedience that is holding oneself in readiness to go or do; listening, that holding quiet and still so as to hear."

“God gives us material for sacrifice. Sometimes the sacrifice makes little sense to others, but when offered to Him is always accepted.”

“I cannot love you if I love not Him.”

“When the will of God crosses the will of man, someone has to die.” ~Addison Leitch

“We have to learn to trust in little things, even what may seem like silly things.”

“I know no other prayer than Thy will be done.”

“Say yes to God, He will bring the very best to pass.”

“When obedience to God contradicts what I think will give me pleasure, let me ask myself if I love Him…yes to God always leads in the end to joy.”

“The Christian mortifies the flesh by submitting to the authority of Christ.”

“Christ woos us, calls us, wins us, gives us His name, shares with us His destiny, takes responsibility for us, and loves us with a love stronger than death.”

“For God called us to holiness, not to impurity.”

“The concept of purity does not deny life, it refers back to the giver of life Himself. Purity means freedom from contamination, from anything that would spoil the taste or the pleasure, reduce the power…it means cleanness.”

“A man’s love for a woman ought to hold her to the highest. Her love for him ought to do the same.”

“Love means following the commands of God.”

“It is the yielding, not the temptation itself that is sin.”

“Why put yourself in any situation where the lines become smudged and obscure? Why take the risks? Why accept the pressure of tremendous temptation when you can easily avoid it by refusing to be anywhere where compromise is possible?”

“There is no ongoing spiritual life without the process of letting go.”

“The kind of love that sustains a marriage is God given, but it is also a daily choice for the rest of your life.”

“Christ is the head of the church. He loves, woos, calls, sacrifices Himself. He does not impose His will.”

“Jesus came into the world specifically for us who blew it, not for those who ‘need no repentance’.”

On Christ our foundation lies

So, at the beginning of the year, I was going to write everyday. Apparently that didn't happen, but I'm still going to write when I can. Today's writing is going to be rare. Random fact about me: I hate history. I find it extremely boring and repetitive, but since I'm supposed to be studying my history chapter this very minute, I might as well write about it to encourage and end to my procrastination.

On Christ our foundation lies

George Washington once said, "It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible" and that is how this country started--with strong emphasis on God and the Bible. So why have today's politicians strayed so far away from our original foundation? The answer is unknown.

There are so many controversial issues in politics today. Abortion, gay marriage, etc... A large number of people seem to be confused on these issues when the answers are clear and black and white in the Word of God.

Abortion:
"For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb...I am fearfully and wonderfully made." -Psalm 139:13-14

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, who you have received from God? You are not your own." -1 Corinthians 6:19

Gay Marriage:
"The Lord God said, 'It is not good for man to be alone, I will make a suitable helper for him.'...Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib He had taken out of the man and He brought her to the man...a man will his father and mother and and be united to his wife and they will become one flesh." -Genesis 2:18,22,24

"Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman. That is detestable." -Leviticus 18:22

On almost all of the situations that political figures are confused about today, the answers can be found where God and the Bible are found. God is absolute truth as well a His Word, and our country would be somewhere completely different today if we hadn't lost where our foundations began: in Christ.
